Logrolling is when congressmen trade votes. This usually occurs with a specialized bill that targets money or projects in certain congressional districts. Because not all members of Congress are affected, an unaffected member of congress has the ability to exchange a yea vote now for one on a future, similar bill in return. This will in turn help both congressmen on issues that are pertinent in their congressional region and to their constituents. Consensus building is when a resolution is drawn, from a multiparty dispute, that comes as close as possible to every persons interests in the group. This is mainly used in environmental disputes and public policy. Members of Congress participate in consensus building because they are interested in insuring that what they want out of a certain bill. Because they participate, it is more likely that the bill will include what they, their district, and the constituents favor. Pork barreling is when representatives bring home legislation that increases public works programs, military bases, or other programs that benefit their districts directly. Pork barreling is important for a representative because it usually increases his or her approval rating with the constituents by providing more jobs and boosting the areas economy.
